6 November

10 weird and wonderful events which happened on 6 November:

  1. James Naismith, the man who invented Basketball, was born on this date in 1861. He was working at the YMCA Training School in Massachusetts when his principal asked him to invent a safe indoor game to replace boring exercises during winter. The game he came up with was basketball, today watched by millions and played in over 200 countries. He said "I had accomplished two seemingly impossible tasks, to interest the class in physical exercise and to invent a new game."
  2. On this date in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected 16th president of the US and was the first Republican to win the presidency.
  3. In 1993, the world's largest Peanut butter and jelly Sandwich (40 feet long and containing 150lbs of creamy peanut butter and 50lbs of grape jelly) was made in Peanut, Pa. (pop. 150) during a charity fund-raiser.

  7. In 1956, the British colonial government in Rhodesia began building a dam across the Zambesi river between North and South Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe). When completed in June 1959, it was the largest dam of its time. It rises 128 meters (420 feet) from the riverbed to create the 6000 square kilometre Lake Kariba and provides electricity to the region. The Kariba dam and the lake it created are one of Africa's seven man-made wonders.
