1. Born on this date in 1840 was Claude Monet, French impressionist painter whose works include Water Lilies and Weeping Willow.
2. In 2003 Boonchai Lotharakphong. a 43 year old factory owner, decided to do something about his money troubles. He visited a fortune teller, who sold him a flag believed to ward off bad luck. He climbed on the roof of his factory to raise the flag, slipped and fell to his death.
3. In 1998, Denis Rodman, Chicago Bulls basketball player, married Carmen Electra, Playboy model and Baywatch actress, in Las Vegas. Rodman filed for divorce two days later, claiming he'd been too drunk to know what he was doing.
4. 1666 The first documented case of a Blood transfusion was reported by the English physician Samuel Pepys on this date in 1666. The transfusion was from one dog to another. The recipient survived, but the donor dog died.
5. Herman Melville's Moby Dick was published by Harper and Brothers in New York on this date in 1851.
6. In 1971, Mariner 9 reached Mars, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit another planet.
7. In 1889, inspired by Jules Verne, New York reporter Nellie Bly set out to travel around the world in less than 80 days. She did it in 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes and 14 seconds.
8. This date in 2001 saw the opening of the World Toilet Summit in Singapore. 200 delegates from 15 countries attended. The opening ceremony consisted of mime artists depicting desirable and undesirable toilet behaviours.
9. In 2005, in readiness for the annual domino challenge held by Weijers Domino Productions in Holland, over 4 million dominoes had been set up. A Sparrow got into the hall and knocked over 23,000 of them.
10. The Yines, a previously unknown indigenous tribe, was discovered in the Amazonian jungle of south-east Peru on this date in 2010.
