1 July: Estee Lauder

Cosmetics businesswoman Estée Lauder was born on this date in 1908. Here are some thing you might not know about her.

1. She was born in Queens, New York and her parents gave her the name Josephine Esther Mentzer. Esther was to be her first name, after a much loved great aunt, but her parents decided at the last minute to name her Josephine with Esther as her middle name. It didn’t stick; she was soon nicknamed Esty and ‘Estée’ was a variation of that.

2. Her father had a hardware store and the young Estée would often help out there. It was here she developed a taste and aptitude for business. Although she did harbour a dream of becoming an actress, with her "name in lights, Flowers and handsome men".

3. Fashion and beauty were early interests, and when an uncle from Hungary came to stay, who happened to be a skin specialist, she started helping him out, and learned from him.

4. In her early twenties, she met and married Joseph Lauter, who later changed his name to Lauder. They were married for nine years before Estée decided she’d married too young and wanted to experience all the aspects of life she had missed, and so they divorced. She soon realised she’d made a mistake and had given up the "sweetest husband in the world". They remarried three years after the divorce and stayed together until Joseph died in 1983.

5. In 1946, Estée and Joseph Lauder founded ‘Estée Lauder cosmetics. Initially, they sold just four products. Estée strongly believed that the ideal beauty routine didn’t need to be complicated and involve more than a few key products. She believed 3 minutes morning and evening were enough to spend on beauty routines. “Never sell a customer what she doesn’t want or need,” she wrote. Hence their early range was limited, including Skin treatments, a rouge, and a makeup base. She would go to beauty salons and demonstrate her products to women as they sat under the hairdryer.

6. There’s a story, which may or may not be true, that on one occasion Estée went to sell a perfume to a Department store, but they turned it down. She went out into the shop and smashed a bottle of that perfume on the floor. When customers started asking what that fragrance was, the store had to change their minds and place an order.

7. In 1953, women generally didn’t buy perfume for themselves but rather had to wait for their husbands to buy it for them as a gift. Estée had the idea of combining a perfume with a bath oil, which women would buy for themselves. Hence they could also get as much perfume as they wanted whenever they liked.

8. Her company’s innovations included the first night serum, as she understood that skin repairs itself mostly at night and the texture of a serum was the best to penetrate the skin and aid the process. She invented the “Gift with Purchase” concept, now a standard industry practice. She was also the first to produce a high-end fragrance for men, Aramis, in 1963.

9. It was important to Estée to know her employees personally, even when the company grew into a large corporation. She made sure to meet all prospective employees in person. “I don’t look at their resumes…I look at them,” she said. “My decision is based on chemical reaction."

10. She was the first woman to receive the Chevalier class of the Legion of Honour from the Consul General of France in 1978; and was the only woman on Time Magazine's 1998 list of the 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century.

25 June: Louis Mountbatten

This date in 1900 was the birthdate of Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma. 19 facts about him:

1. Louis Mountbatten was born in Frogmore House, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, the son of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse. He was Elizabeth II’s second cousin, and Prince Philip’s Uncle.

2. His full name when christened was His Serene Highness, Prince Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas of Battenberg. Queen Victoria and Tsar Nicholas II were his godparents. However, his nickname among his family was “Dickie” even though none of those many names was Richard. Queen Victoria had suggested “Nicky” but there were already several Nickys in the extended family so it got changed to Dickie. His last name changed from Battenberg to Mountbatten in 1917 when the British royal family wanted to distance themselves from their German roots.

3. Mountbatten joined the Royal Navy in 1916, specialising in communications and received his first command in 1934 on the destroyer HMS Daring. He was nicknamed ‘the Master of Disaster’ in the Navy for his penchant of getting into messes. In May 1941, his ship HMS Kelly was sunk by German dive-bombers off the coast of Crete, losing more than half the crew, and he commanded the ill fated Allied forces seaborne raid on the German-occupied port of Dieppe in France. Within 10 hours, of the 6,086 men who landed, 3,623 had been killed, wounded or become prisoners of war.

4. He tried to warn America that Pearl Harbor, which he visited while in command of HMS Illustrious in 1941, was vulnerable to an attack by Japan. Nobody listened to him at the time, but he was proved right in December that year when the attack happened.

5. Mountbatten married Edwina Ashley in July 1922 and they had two daughters who both served as ladies in waiting to the Queen. Both Edwina and Louis had numerous affairs, though, and there were rumours that some of Mountbatten’s were with men. After Edwina died in 1960, Mountbatten had several relationships with other women including actress Shirley MacLaine.

6. He was a father figure to Prince Philip, who was estranged from his father, and it was Mountbatten who arranged for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to visit Dartmouth Royal Naval College in 1939 and bring their daughters with them. He gave Philip the job of amusing the princesses while their parents went on a tour of the college.

7. His matchmaking continued with the next generation as he became a mentor to Prince Charles. He told the young prince to make the most of his bachelor life and then marry a young, inexperienced girl, which, he claimed, would ensure a stable marriage. He tried to set Charles up with one of his granddaughters, but that didn’t work out. He then warned him off marrying Camilla Shand, warning that his affair with Camilla meant he was on the same slippery slope as his uncle, King Edward VIII, which ended with his marriage to Wallis Simpson.

8. His hobbies and interests included genealogy, in particular, his own links with other European monarchs. From 1957 until his death, he served as Patron of the Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society. He was also a keen polo player, and wrote a book about it.

9. He oversaw the defeat of the Japanese offensive towards India during World War Two and then the transition of British India to independence. He was appointed the last British Viceroy of India, and became its first Governor-General.

10. Lord Mountbatten regularly holidayed with his family in Classiebawn Castle in Mullaghmore, Co Sligo. He had a boat there, which was blown up by the IRA, killing him, his two grandsons, the Dowager Lady Brabourne and a local boy. The man responsible for the bomb was one Thomas McMahon who attached the bomb to the boat while it was left unattended. McMahon was arrested before the bomb even went off, because he was suspected of driving a stolen car. Police noticed flecks of paint on his clothes, which they later matched to the paint on Mountbatten’s boat. McMahon was sentenced to life imprisonment, but released in 1998 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

Today is Avon Representative Day, so here are 10 facts about Avon.

1. There are 6.4 million Avon representatives throughout the world, so a lot of people are celebrating today!

2. Avon was founded by David H. McConnell, originally a door to door salesman selling books, based in New York. He hit on the idea of selling perfumes that way instead. He set up an office for his new company at 126 Chambers Street, Manhattan, New York in 1886.

3. It was originally known as the "California Perfume Company," because McConnell had a business partner who lived there and suggested it because many Flowers grow there.

4. The name Avon was not adopted until 1939.

5. With sales of $9.1 billion worldwide, Avon is the fourteenth-largest beauty company.

6. McConnell employed women as salespeople, believing that women should have some financial independence. While we’ve all heard the term “Avon Lady”, there are Avon gentlemen, too nowadays.

7. In 1989, Avon announced that it would no longer test its products on animals. However, some of its products are required to be tested in other countries where animals are still used. Hence People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has not included Avon on their cruelty-free list.

8. As well as selling cosmetics and personal care products, Avon is involved in charity work, raising money for good causes like breast cancer research.

9. They were the first mass-market company to stabilise Vitamin C.

3 March: George Pullman

George Pullman, inventor and industrialist, inventor of the railway sleeping car was born on this date in 1831.

1. Pullman was born in Brocton, New York, the son of Emily Caroline and Lewis Pullman, who was a carpenter and inventor. He was one of nine children.

2. His father had invented a machine that could move buildings onto new foundations. George took over the family business at the age of 22 when his father died.

3. Three years later, he won a contract with the State of New York to use his father’s invention to move buildings to make way for a canal.

4. His wife’s name was Harriet Sanger. She was the daughter of a construction company owner. They had four children. There was also a man named Gustave Behring who claimed he was Pullman’s illegitimate son.

5. He spent some time in Colorado during the gold rush. He saw a business opportunity catering to the needs of miners there. He opened a ranch, providing food, accommodation and supplies for the miners and a place to exchange tired teams of animals for fresh ones before ascending the mountain passes, earning the ranch the name Pullman’s Switch.

6. Pullman is most famous for inventing the railway sleeping car, which he modelled on packet boats and marketed as a luxury way to travel. After Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, his body was carried in one of Pullman’s carriages from Washington DC, to Springfield, which with thousands of people lining the route, helped raise awareness of the sleeping cars.

7. He hired freed slaves to provide services to his passengers. These men served as porters, valets, entertainers and waiters. Whether this was a good job or not isn’t clear as at least one of my sources contradicted itself, saying at one point that these men had to live on the tips they got, but later saying they were well paid and got to travel and were hence well respected in their communities. They became known as Pullman porters.

8. He founded a company town in Chicago for the workers in his factory, which sounds like a good thing to do, but he turned out to be as big an asshole as many of the super rich people today. In 1894, when the demand died down, Pullman cut jobs and wages but still charged the same rent and didn’t cut utility costs in his town, which led to violent strike action by the residents for which federal troops were called in.

9. On October 19, 1897, Pullman died of a heart attack in Chicago, Illinois. He was 66 years old.

10. He was buried in a mahogany coffin lined with lead, which was then encased in a block of concrete. This was because his family feared that his disgruntled employees might try to dig him up and desecrate the body.

A Tale of Two Sisters

During a battle with supervillains, a horrific accident leaves the Warner family with no option but to believe their youngest daughter, Jessica, is dead. It doesn't occur to them that the bad guys could, or would, save her.

Jessica wakes up with no memory of who she is or how she came to be on a space station with two bionic legs, a bionic arm and a bionic eye. 5. Roberta Williams: American video game designer and writer, who co-founded Sierra On-Line with her husband, game developer Ken Williams. She is known for creating and maintaining the King's Quest series, as well as designing the full motion video game Phantasmagoria in 1995.

10. Roberta Gellis: American writer of historical fiction, historical romance, and fantasy. She held master's degrees in both biochemistry and medieval literature.
