10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 3 November:
- In 1957, Laika, Soviet space dog, became the first animal to orbit the Earth and the first animal to die in space. Laika, a stray, underwent training with two other dogs, and was chosen as the occupant of Sputnik 2 which was launched into space on this date. Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable, and Laika had always been doomed.
- On this date in 1927, Turkey adopted the Roman alphabet, abolishing the use of Arabic.
- In 1954, the first of the Godzilla series of films was released in Japan.
- Treasure Island, by RL Stevenson, was published on this date in 1883.
- In 1952, Charles Birdseye first marketed frozen Peas, and frozen bread went on sale for the first time.
- In 1953, the first official British UFO was sighted by RAF officers Smyth and Johnson as they flew 20,000 feet above Kent at 10 a.m.
- In 1985, Humphrey, a humpback whale spotted in the fresh water Sacramento River system more than three weeks earlier, was lured to salt water near California's Golden Gate, by rescuers using a device emitting whale sounds.
- In 1987, Vancouver resident Mark Thompson Hebbard’s snores peaked at a record 90dbA, maintaining a level of 85dbA. In Vancouver, the limit for acceptable traffic noise is 83dbA.
- In 2006, more than 1,224 people called Jones gathered at the Jones Jones Jones event at the Millennium Centre in Wales. It was the world's largest same last name gathering and was hosted by Grace Jones and other famous Joneses.
- One World Trade Center officially opened on this date in 2014, replacing its predecessor 13 years after the September 11 attacks.
