9 June

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 9 June:

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

  1. This date in 1836 saw the birth of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first woman to gain a medical qualification in Britain. She was also the first woman mayor, of Aldeburgh. It would appear her father disapproved of her wanting to be a doctor. She said, "I asked my father what there was to make doctoring more disgusting than nursing, which women were always doing, and which ladies had done publicly in the Crimea. He could not tell me."
  2. In 2001, George Kafats, a customer in a crowded Athens restaurant, was killed by a flying lamb-chop when an oven exploded.
  3. In 1934, Donald Duck was born, or more accurately, hatched, in the short animated film The Wise Little Hen. Donald was meant to be a secondary character but became a star in his own right.
  4. In 1988, a giant Moth with a wing span of 6 inches was found in Northamptonshire.
  5. In 2010, the world's oldest leather Shoe was found in Vayots Dzor, Armenia.
  6. In 1996, the organisers of the Euro 96 Football championships drew up a list of offensive weapons which would not be allowed into matches. The list included bagpipes.
  7. In 2000, a burglar at Castle Donington Leicestershire stole 6 security cameras, but left behind a video tape showing his face.
  8. In 2001, at a hospital pharmacy in Jordan, a burglar stole 3 sleeping tablets, and took them right away. He was found asleep by pharmacy staff the following morning.
  9. In 1979, Michael Cairney toppled a record row of 169,713 dominoes.
  10. In 1999, Roger Taylor became the first living person to appear on a British Postage stamp. He was in the background on the 19p Freddie Mercury stamp. Until that point there had been a ban on living people appearing on stamps except for the sovereign. At least his band was called Queen.

The Power of Love

Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic  ordering  and the significance of chance  encounters. She believes there's a spiritual  explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into  mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of  her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
