2 June

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 2 June:

  1. This date in 1857 saw the birth of the English composer Edward Elgar, whose works include Pomp and Circumstance and Enigma Variations. He once said, "There is music in the air, music all around us, the world is full of it and you simply take as much as you require."
  2. Born on this date in 1931 was NASA astronaut Pete Conrad. He was the third man to walk on the Moon. He also described himself as the first man to dance on the Moon. Taking his first step, he proclaimed: "Whoopie! Man, that may have been a small one for Neil, but that's a long one for me." His personal motto: "If you can’t be good, be colourful."
  3. In 1886, Grover Cleveland became the first US president to marry while in office. He married Frances Folsom in a White House ceremony.
  4. Another wedding on this date in 1989 was that of Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman, 52, and model Mandy Smith, 19. In a twisted side note, Wyman's son dated Mandy's mother!
  5. In 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  6. In 1897, responding to rumours that he was dead or dying, Mark Twain, 61, was quoted by the "New York Journal" as saying that "the report of my death was an exaggeration."
  7. On this date in 1953, Princess Elizabeth of the United Kingdom was crowned Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey. This date had been chosen because it had been, in the past, the most consistently sunny day of the year, but it turned out to be a dull, showery day. It was the first coronation to be televised.
  8. Robert and Edward Kennedy opened the Children’s Zoo in London’s Regent’s Park on this date in 1937, the first of its type in the world.
  9. In 1954, Lester Piggott, at 18, became the youngest jockey to win the Derby when he rode 33-1 outsider Never Say Die to victory at Epsom by two lengths.
  10. In 1997, Valdo Yahillo and Erkki Kylu, from Estonia, completed a bid to break the world joke telling record by quipping for 61 hours, only to discover their copy of the Guinness Book of Records was out of date and the record was now over 100 hours.

The Power of Love

Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic  ordering  and the significance of chance  encounters. She believes there's a spiritual  explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into  mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of  her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
