18 May: Eric Name Day

Today is the name day for people called Eric. Eric/Erik is an old Norse name which means "eternal ruler, ever powerful". 10 famous Erics:

  1. Erik the Red: Norse explorer, who according to medieval and Icelandic sagas founded the first settlement in Greenland. He most likely earned the epithet "the Red" due to the colour of his hair and beard.
  2. Eric Cantona: French footballer. He played for Manchester United, and is known for turning up his collar. After retiring from Football he became an actor and producer.
  3. Eric Clapton: English guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. He is the only person to be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times: once as a solo artist and also as a member of the Yardbirds and of Cream.
  4. Eric Liddell: Scottish athlete and missionary. He competed in the 1924 Paris Olympics, but had to withdraw from his best event, the 100 metres, because one of the heats was held on a Sunday, because, as a devout Christian, that was a day of rest. His story is told in the 1981 film, Chariots of Fire.
  5. Eric Morecambe: English comedian, partner of Ernie Wise.
  6. Eric Idle: English comedian, actor, singer and comedic composer, a member of the Monty Python Team and the spoof band, The Rutles.
  7. Eric Sykes: English radio, television and film writer, actor and director who wrote for, and performed with, comedy greats such as Tony Hancock and the Goons.
  8. Eric Stoltz: American actor, director and producer whose film roles include The Mask and Pulp Fiction. He was almost Marty McFly in Back to the Future as well, when it was thought Michael J Fox, the first choice, was tied up filming a TV series. They started filming with Stoltz but after about a month, Fox's filming schedule changed and Stoltz was replaced by Fox. In the TV series Fringe, in one episode set in a parallel universe, cinema hoardings are seen which read "Back to the Future starring Eric Stoltz".
  9. Eric Cartman: one of the four main characters in the TV series South Park
  10. Eric Northman: love interest of Sookie Stackhouse in the Southern Vampire Mysteries novels and the TV series True Blood. He is a vampire, slightly over one thousand years old.
