21 May: 10 famous Monicas

Today is the Czech name day for people called Monica.

Monica is an ancient name of North African origin, which might refer to the ancient Libyan god Mon, whose name was derived from the Egyptian god Amun. 10 famous Monicas:

  1. Saint Monica: early African Christian saint and mother of St. Augustine of Hippo. She is remembered for her outstanding Christian virtues, despite her husband's adultery. Saint Monica wept every night for her son Augustine until he was converted.
  2. Monica Thorne: One of the earliest references to the name in literature, a character in the 1858 novel Doctor Thorne by Anthony Trollope.
  3. Monica Dickens: English writer, the great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens.
  4. Monica Arnold: American singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, and businesswoman. Her debut album was Miss Thang.
  5. Monica Geller-Bing: fictional character on the American sitcom Friends, played by Courteney Cox. Monica appears in all of the show's 236 episodes. Monica is the younger sister of Ross Geller and best friend of Rachel Green.
  6. Monica Ali: Bangladeshi-born British writer whose debut novel was Brick Lane.
  7. Monica Lewinsky: American activist and former White House intern. President Bill Clinton admitted to having had an affair with Lewinsky while she worked at the White House in 1995–1996.
  8. Monica: Brazilian fictional character, the main protagonist and title character of the Monica's Gang comic book series.
  9. Monica Seles: tennis player, who represented Yugoslavia and the United States. She won nine Grand Slam singles titles, eight of them as a teenager while representing Yugoslavia, and the final one while representing the United States.
  10. Monica Gallagher: character in the TV show Shameless.
