10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 2 October:

  1. Two classic comedians were born on this date. In 1890, Groucho Marx, one of the Marx Brothers who once said, "I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member." In 1895, Bud Abbott, one half of the Abbot and Costello partnership.
  2. Born this date in 1951 was Gordon Matthew Sumner, singer, musician, best known as Sting of The Police. He also acted in films including Quadrophenia and Dune. He got the nickname Sting because he often wore a yellow and black jumper.
  3. Oasis released their second album (What's The Story), Morning Glory on this date in 1995.
  4. In 2000 Scott Dominguez, 24, was water-skiing at 112mph (180km/h) on the Clarence River, near Grafton, New South Wales, when a flock of Swans flew across his path. He slammed into 5 swans and was killed. We're not told whether the swans survived.
  5. The Twilight Zone made its debut on US TV on this date in 1959. The programme ran for 5 seasons. Episodes would begin with the words: "There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fear and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone."
  6. In 2002, Robbie Williams signed the most lucrative British record deal in history when he signed with EMI records for £80m. Asked what he was going to do with the Money Robbie said, "I'm going to count it all."
  7. Peanuts, Charles Schultz’s cartoon strip featuring Charlie Brown, first appeared in nine newspapers on this date in 1950. It was to have been called Li’l Folks, but the syndication agency United Features insisted it was changed. The strip had only four characters at its inception: Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty, Shermy and Snoopy. Later, Schulz introduced Linus, Lucy, and others, and informed readers that they lived in Sebastopol, California.
  8. In 1996, Professor Bryan Clarke of Nottingham University was reported to have saved a rare species of Snail by feeding it Porridge.
  9. On this date in 2010, Druidry was recognised as religion for first time in the United Kingdom.
  10. In 1997, Czech police found an “exceptionally well forged” 1,000 crown note in Jablnoec. The forgers had made one mistake – replacing the words “Forging of notes will be prosecuted in accordance with the law” with “This note is a fake”.
