5 October

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 5 October:

  1. In 1992, a priest named Don Giacomo Perini cursed the rain as he stood outside his church in Alto Adige, Italy; whereupon a cross, loosened by the rain, fell on his head and killed him.
  2. The wedding of Phet and Ploy, two Cats in Bangkok, took place on this date in 1996. Their owners spent £18,000 on the nuptials, including Gold rings made especially for paws. Both animals were suffering from “diamond eye”, a form of glaucoma which results in a blue film over the eye and is believed in Thailand to bring luck.
  3. The Jarrow March began on this date in 1936 in which unemployed shipyard workers walked from Jarrow to London, delivering a petition with over 11,500 signatures to the Government.
  4. The first broadcast of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The show which gave the world the Parrot Sketch, the Four Yorkshiremen sketch and the Ministry of Silly Walks was on this date in 1969.
  5. In 1974 Dave Kunst became the first person verified as walking around the world. On June 20 1970, Dave and John Kunst had left Waseca, Minnesota, to walk around the world. On October 21 1972 in the foothills of the Hindu Kush Mountains the brothers were attacked by bandits and were shot. John was killed and Dave spent 4 months recuperating before resuming his trek. Today, Dave Kunst, now with his brother Pete at his side, returned to Waseca after 20 million steps, 21 pairs of Shoes and 14,450 miles.
  6. In 1977, in the small town of Lake Arthur, New Mexico, USA, near the famous ‘alien town’ of Roswell, Mario Rubio was rolling a burrito for her husband Eduardo’s breakfast, when she noticed skillet burns on the tortilla that resembled the face of Jesus. She convinced a reluctant priest to bless the piece of bread, then built a shrine around it, and quit her job to devote her full time to tending the sacred tortilla.
  7. In 1995, a gang tried to break into a Fireworks factory in Kent, but only managed to set Fire to their getaway van. The blaze ignited several tons of fireworks and demolished the building.
  8. In 1646, a bounty of 100 pounds of Tobacco was offered in the Virginia Colony for evidence of having killed a wolf.
  9. In 1830, the world's first bathing costume was put on sale in a shop in Baker Street, London.
  10. In 1995, it was announced in Australia that a contraceptive for Kangaroos was being developed.
