3 October

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 3 October:

  1. Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson got married on this date in 1992.
  2. Later that day, Sinead O'Connor tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live in a protest about abortion laws. There was stunned silence in the studio and the station went to a commercial break.
  3. In 1888, Gilbert and Sullivan's Yeomen of the Guard was performed for the first time, at the Savoy Theatre.
  4. In 1995, Stephen Hawking said time travel was possible, but only for nuclear particles.
  5. Bloomingdale's Department store in New York opened on this date in 1972.
  6. In 1066, William of Normandy’s invasion force landed at Pevensey, completely unopposed as King Harold’s army were away fighting the Vikings. They set up camp near Hastings to wait for Harold.
  7. In 1996, 48 security cameras were stolen from Stafford city centre.
  8. In 1978 arguably the greatest shoplifter of all time finally got his come-uppance when he was jailed for three years in London. The Australian part-time language teacher had art treasures and luxury goods worth £90,000 at his flat. He'd even stolen a carpet worth £1,500 even though it was nailed to the floor at Harrods. His extraordinary career came to an abrupt and ignominious end when he was caught stealing a tin of wax polish by store detective Sylvia Keeble, who let down the tyres on his getaway Bicycle.
  9. In 1995, Kyiv council established a commission to rename 38 streets in the city which were all called “Vosttochnaya” (East), as it was rather confusing.
  10. In 2010, archaeologists digging at a site on the Egypt-Gaza border unearthed parts of a possible hidden city which they believe is more than 2,000 years old.
