1. On this date in 1941, two men went to the electric chair in Florida. Their names were Willburn and Frizzel.
2. In 1991, Elizabeth Taylor married construction worker Larry Fortensky. It was Taylor's eighth marriage and Fortensky's third. The ceremony was held at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. The two had met while staying at the Betty Ford Clinic.
3. 1917 The word Jazz first appeared in print on this date in 1917. The Literary Digest described jazz as music that caused people to "shake, jump and writhe in ways to suggest a return to the medieval jumping mania."
4. Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre – appearing under the pseudonym Currer Bell–was published in London by Smith, Elder on this date in 1847.
5. In 2018, at an auction in London, the painting Girl with Balloon by Banksy sold for US$1.4 million, and promptly self-destructed through a built-in shredder hidden in the frame.
6. In 1807, Potassium was discovered by Humphrey Davy.
7. In 1995, the first discovery of a planet around a star similar to the sun was announced. The planet in question is about 160 times the mass of the Earth and orbits around the star 51 Pegasus.
8. In 2004, a photographer waited outside a subway take-away shop in Malibu, California to take pictures of Britney Spears and her new husband. When Britney emerged, she threw a full cup of cola over him.
9. In 1996, two men turned themselves in in Cairns, Australia, after stealing a car and finding a dead body on the back seat.
10. In 2002, electrician Mike McDermott, 51, of Gosport, Hampshire, won £121,157 on Lotto. This was four months after having won £194,501 on Lotto, using the same numbers – 15, 16, 18, 36, 49 and 28.
