15 October

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 15 October:

  1. In 1996, a British tourist in Cyprus fell to his death from a second storey balcony. He lost his balance while showing off how well he could throw a melon into a public rubbish bin.
  2. In 1995, Paul and Linda McCartney made guest voice appearances on The Simpsons. They counselled Lisa Simpson on vegetarianism.
  3. In 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd's Street Survivors album was released. The original cover showed group members enveloped in flames. It was quickly changed, however, after three of the group were killed in a plane crash five days later.
  4. In 1993, the world's largest cookie made was baked in Arcadia, California. It measured 1,001 square feet and contained 3 million Chocolate chips.
  5. A US Air Force crew picked up a mysterious aircraft on radar while flying over Japan on this date in 1948. It was travelling at 200 miles an hour, but when they tried to catch up with it, it would accelerate to speeds of 1200 miles an hour, and then slow down, as if challenging the jet to give chase.
  6. The highest goal score ever by an English club in a major competition occurred on this date in 1887. Preston North End beat Hyde 26-0 in an FA Cup tie.
  7. In 1860 Grace Bedell, 11, of Westfield, New York, wrote a letter to presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln, suggesting he could improve his appearance by growing a Beard.
  8. In 2001, Bob Dylan was refused entry to the backstage area of his own concert in Oregon because he didn't have ID.
  9. The worst storm to hit England since 1703 occurred on this date in 1987. It was responsible for the deaths of 18 people in England and four in France. Winds gusting up to 185 kph (115 mph) cut a swathe of destruction across southern England. 15 million trees were lost, including one third of those in Kew Gardens in London and six of the seven famous Oak trees in Sevenoaks in Kent.
  10. In 1995, Norman Newmarch drove to a Toronto police station to ask if he was too drunk to drive home. They decided he was not only too drunk to drive home, but too drunk to have driven to the station in the first place and charged him with drunken driving.

I write Fiction, too.
