- Born this date in 1862 was Claude Debussy, French composer. His works include La Mer, Clair de lune, The Girl with the Flaxen Hair and The Submerged Cathedral. He said, "Music is the space between the notes."
- Born this date in 1893 was Dorothy Parker, American writer famed for her caustic wit. She said: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."
- In 1995, at the Tower of London, a Raven called Charlie was killed by a police dog which was also called Charlie.
- In 2003, Kjell Henning Bjoernestad, a Norwegian Elvis Presley impersonator, set a world record by singing Elvis hits non-stop for over 26 hours.
- In 1762, Ann Franklin became the first woman to hold the title of an American newspaper editor, at The Newport Mercury in Newport, Rhode Island.
- The Order of the Rosy Cross was founded on this date in 1623. The Rosicrucians are a legendary and secretive Order associated with the symbol of the Rose Cross, and were associated with alchemy.
- In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt became the first US chief executive to ride in a car, in Hartford, Conn.
- In 1997, Hiromichi Katsuki was charged with stealing a lunch box from a car. He admitted stealing another 80 lunches, about two every day. All the lunches were home made, because he was “fussy about flavour”.
- In 565, St Columba reported seeing a monster in Loch Ness, the earliest alleged sighting.
- In 1980, Fuatai Solo achieved the fastest time to climb up a 9m coconut tree barefoot (4.88 seconds), in Fiji.
