10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 17 August
- This date in 1893 saw the birth of Mae West, actress and screenwriter. She said, "It's not the men in your life that matters, it's the life in your men."
- In 2000 housemates in the first series of the TV show Big Brother discovered that “Nasty Nick” had been cheating. They confronted him around the table and he was later evicted from the house for breaking the rules.
- In 1981, a 65,000,000 year old Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton was discovered in South Dakota.
- In 1997, the first Camel races in Northern Europe were held in Berlin.
- In 2008, US swimmer Michael Phelps became the first person to win eight gold medals in one Olympic Games.
- In 1964, Glasgow council announced that all men with Beatle styled haircuts must wear bathing caps after a committee was told that hair from 'Beatle-cuts' was clogging the pool's filters.
- In 2009, a man in New Zealand reserved a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall at a record shop in Christchurch, leaving his name and phone number. Then, he robbed the till.
- In 1590 John White, the leader of 117 colonists sent in 1587 to Roanoke Island (North Carolina) to establish a colony, returned from a trip to England to find the settlement deserted. No trace of the settlers was ever found.
- In 1980, Dingos snatched baby Azaria Chamberlain from a camp ground near Ayers Rock, Australia. The mother, Lindy Chamberlain, was convicted of murder and spent three years in prison, but the conviction was eventually overturned when it was established that dingos probably were to blame.
- In 2001, a king Penguin at Edinburgh Zoo named Nils Olav, who'd been sponsored by the Norwegian Army since 1972, was promoted to Honourable Regimental Sergeant Major in formal ceremony. Zoo keeper Rob Thomas placed a silver badge on his right flipper.
