10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 14 August:
- The Rainbow Arch in Utah, USA, was discovered on this date in 1909.
- Staying with Rainbows, in 1979 a rainbow was seen in North Wales which lasted over three hours.
- In 1994 Space telescope Hubble photographed Uranus, showing that it had rings.
- The world’s first car Registration Plates, driving licences and parking restrictions were introduced in France on this date in 1893.
- On this date in 1901, Gustave A. Whitehead claimed to have made a ½ mile flight in his aircraft – two years before the Wright brothers' first flight.
- In 1982, Bill Neal became the first person to paddle a Bathtub across the English Channel. He used a single oar to paddle his steel bathtub and it took him 13½ hours. In order to avoid being arrested by French authorities he registered his tub with Lloyds of London as an ocean-going craft.
- In 1976, the longest softball game, was played in Monticello, N.Y. between Gager's Diner and Bend'n Elbow Tavern took 30 hours to play.
- In 2001 the Smallest ever sculpture was created at Osaka University Japan using an infra-red laser. It was a fighting bull and measured 10X7 micrometres.
- White-van man, gaydar, fashion icon and bindhi were among 67 new words added to the Oxford Compact English Dictionary on this date in 2000. Blairism had been considered, but wasn't included, as it was dismissed as a fad.
- In 1953, the whiffle ball was invented by David Mullany Sr. for his 13 year old son. It was a ball that curved when it was thrown.
