- This date in 1874 saw the birth of Herbert Hoover, 31st US President. He was the first Quaker to be president, the first president born west of the Mississippi, and the first to have a telephone on his desk.
- In 2005 South Korean gamer Lee Seung Seop died from exhaustion after playing the computer game StarCraft continuously for 49 hours.
- In 1675, King Charles II laid the foundation stone of a pioneering observatory at Greenwich.
- In 1889, Dan Rylands, of Hope Glass Works, Barnsley, Yorkshire, patented the screw-top bottle.
- In 2003, Yuri Ivanovich Malenchenko became the first person to marry in space.
- At a Cricket match in Berwick upon Tweed on this date in 1975, the umpire was struck by Lightning. The joint in his artificial leg was fused solid.
- In 1997, the family of Romona Safont from Avia, Spain agreed to let her celebrate her 100th birthday on board a Hot air balloon provided she gave up her plans to paraglide. She always liked to be daring on her birthday, the family said.
- In 1999, 250 new style ultra bright rechargeable cats-eyes were stolen from the A449.
- In 1901, British teachers Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain visited the palace of Versailles. They later claimed to have stepped back in time and met Marie Antoinette and the Compte de Vaudreuil.
- In 1990, Norwegian Fire eater Inge Widar Svingen alias Benifax, extinguished 25,270 blazing torches in his mouth in 2 hours.
