5 June: Sausage Rolls

National Sausage Roll Day has been celebrated on 5 June since 2015. Here are 10 facts about sausage rolls:

  1. A sausage roll is basically sheets of puff Pastry wrapped around Sausage meat, glazed with Egg or Milk, and baked. They can be eaten hot or cold.

  2. The Romans and Greeks used to wrap meat or other foods in dough, probably the first sausage roll type meal.

  3. The sausage roll as we know it today is thought to have originated in 19th century France, and became popular in England during the Napoleonic Wars.

  4. Back then, they were made using shortcrust pastry instead of puff pastry.

  5. The earliest written references to them include the Bury and Norwich Post mentioning one T. Ling, aged 75, (an industrious vendor of saloop, buns, and sausage rolls) in September 1809.

  6. However, you’d not want to buy them from William Johnstone, "wholesale pork pie manufacturer and sausage roll maker" in 1864, because The Times reported that he’d been fined £15 (£1,600 in today’s money) for having on his premises a large quantity of meat unsound, unwholesome and unfit for food.

  7. According to London police, eating hot sausage rolls between 11pm and 5am in Leicester Square might cause crime and disorder. At least, that was the reason the Met Police gave for turning down Greggs’s application for a 24/7 hot food trading licence in 2022.

  8. Talking of Greggs, they sell around 2.5 million sausage rolls per week.

  9. The longest sausage roll in the world was made by King Pie in South Africa and measured 111.11 metres.

  10. The farthest throw and catch of a sausage roll into the mouth is 43 m (141 ft) and was achieved by Oscar Lynagh (Australia) in Melbourne, Australia, on 24 January 2023.

New!!!

The first in a new series! It has invading aliens, gladiator-style contests, rivalry and romance.

The six richest people in Britain decide to hold a contest to settle the question of which of them is most successful. It will be a gladiator style contest with each entrant fielding a team of ten super-powered combatants. Entrepreneur Llew Powell sets out to put together his team, which includes his former lover, an employee of his company with a fascinating hobby, two refugees from another dimension (a lonely giant and a drunken sailor), two sisters bound together by a promise, a diminutive doctor, a former Tibetan monk initiate and two androids with a history. As the team train together, alliances form, friendships and more develop, while others find the past is not easy to leave behind.

Meanwhile, a ruthless race of aliens has its eyes on the Earth. Already abducting and enslaving humans, they work towards the final invasion which would destroy life on Earth as we know it. Powell’s group, Combat Team Alpha, stumble upon one of the wormholes the aliens use to travel to Earth and witness for themselves the horrors in store if the aliens aren’t stopped. Barely escaping with their lives, they realise there are more important things to worry about than a fighting competition.
