15 June: Wilbert Vere Awdry quotes

This date in 1911 saw the birth of Wilbert Vere Awdry, better known as the Reverend W. Awdry, children's author best known as the author of Thomas the Tank Engine. 10 quotes from him:

  1. Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones we can only dream about.

  2. Your colour’s nice, James—pity about your face, though,” said a freight car.

  3. I should like my epitaph to say, "He helped people see God in the ordinary things of life, and he made children laugh.”

  4. Little engines can do BIG things.

  5. Railways and the Church have their critics, but both are the best ways of getting a man to his ultimate destination.

  6. You've a lot to learn about trucks, little Thomas. They are silly things and must be kept in their place. After pushing them about here for a few weeks you'll know almost as much about them as Edward. Then you'll be a Really Useful Engine.

  7. You're not merely writing for children, you’re writing for the unfortunate people who've got to read the stories over, and over, and over again.

  8. Thomas is given a prohibition; naturally, as all children do when they’re told not to do something, they want to know why, and they find out why by doing it.

  9. That accident served me right for being swanky.

  10. People make clothes from wool. You know – things they wear instead of paint.

New!!!

The first in a new series! It has invading aliens, gladiator-style contests, rivalry and romance.

The six richest people in Britain decide to hold a contest to settle the question of which of them is most successful. It will be a gladiator style contest with each entrant fielding a team of ten super-powered combatants. Entrepreneur Llew Powell sets out to put together his team, which includes his former lover, an employee of his company with a fascinating hobby, two refugees from another dimension (a lonely giant and a drunken sailor), two sisters bound together by a promise, a diminutive doctor, a former Tibetan monk initiate and two androids with a history. As the team train together, alliances form, friendships and more develop, while others find the past is not easy to leave behind.

Meanwhile, a ruthless race of aliens has its eyes on the Earth. Already abducting and enslaving humans, they work towards the final invasion which would destroy life on Earth as we know it. Powell’s group, Combat Team Alpha, stumble upon one of the wormholes the aliens use to travel to Earth and witness for themselves the horrors in store if the aliens aren’t stopped. Barely escaping with their lives, they realise there are more important things to worry about than a fighting competition.
