2 December: Roofs

Today is National Roof-Over-Your-Head Day. Here are ten things you might not know about roofs:

  1. The word roof comes from Old English and Germanic words meaning the top, summit of highest point of something.

  2. The first roofs were made from sticks, animal skins, or leaves. Today, asphalt shingle is by far the most popular form of roofing material.

  3. Flat roofs are not entirely flat. They have a slight slope of at least ¼ inch per foot.

  4. Reeds are naturally waterproof and bundled together will keep the rain out and also insulate the building. Thatched roofs are basically reeds bundled together.

  5. The largest thatched roof in the world is over the Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir in India and covers an area of over five acres.

  6. Clay tiles are some of the oldest roofing materials. Their use can be dated back to as far as 10,000 B.C in China.

  7. The world’s oldest known roof is believed to be the thatched roof of the Neolithic village at Skara Brae in Scotland, which dates back over 5,000 years.

  8. The thinnest roof in the world is over the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia. Its translucent, polycarbonate structure is only 0.02 inches thick.

  9. Metal roofs are not more prone to Lightning strikes than other roofs. Lightning is equally drawn to other materials, not just metals. In fact, metal roofs can protect your home from lightning because they are non-combustible.

  10. The future of roofs may be the green roof, also known as living roofs or eco-roofs, which are roofs featuring vegetation. This provides environmental benefits such as improved insulation, reduced storm-water run-off, and enhanced air quality as well as looking beautiful.
