Today is Partridge Day, or St Partridge’s Day in the UK. The partridge shooting season begins. 10 things you might not know about partridges:
Partridges are members of the Phasianidae family and belong to the order Galliformes, which consists of heavy-bodied, ground-dwelling Birds including Turkeys, Chickens and Quail.
They measure 11 to 13 inches in length and sport a wingspan of 20 to 22 inches. That’s about a quarter of the size of a turkey.
A group of partridges is called a covey.
You won’t ever find one in a Pear tree. They live and nest on the ground.
Both parents care for the chicks, which hatch around the third week of June. Cock birds will fly at weasels and stoats, while hens will feign a broken wing in order to draw away predators.
The young can feed as soon as they leave the nest, and are capable of their first proper flight at 15 days.
The largest recorded grey partridge clutch laid by a single hen in Britain was 25, in Sussex in 1974.
According to Greek legend, the first partridge appeared when Daedalus threw his nephew, Perdix, off the sacred hill of Athena in a fit of jealous rage. This is the alleged reason why partridges live on the ground and avoid high places or flying very high.
In the Middle Ages, partridge meat was considered an aphrodisiac. Doctors of the time claimed "Partridge was superior in arousing dulled passions and increasing the powers of engendering. Gentle to the human stomach, partridge stimulated bodily fluids, raised the spirits, and firmed the muscles."
Along with the oak and a dagger, partridges are a symbol of the Kurdish people.
