10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 6 September:
- In 1791, a day after he'd finished it, Mozart's La Clemenza de Tito was performed in Prague. The empress didn't like it. She labelled the opera as "German swinery."
- In 2013, the Australian Central Rock Rat, not seen since 1960, was re-discovered in Central Australia.
- In 2016, the giant Panda was removed from IUCN's endangered species list; but was replaced by the Eastern Gorilla.
- In 1975, Czechoslovakian tennis star Martina Navratilova, in New York for the US Open Tennis Tournament, requested political asylum.
- In 1988, Thomas Gregory, aged 11, became the youngest person to swim the English Channel. It took him 12 hours.
- The first Barbie Doll was sold by Mattel Toy Corporation on this date in 1959.
- In 1666, The Great fire of London was finally extinguished after four days. Ironically, the fire helped eliminate the Rat population and with it, the Great Plague.
- In 1987, for the first time since 1315, Venice’s gondoliers did not participate in the regatta. They were on strike, protesting about the use of powerboats on Venice’s canals, causing damage to the city.
- The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales took place on this date in 1997 with a funeral service at Westminster Abbey which was broadcast worldwide. Her body was buried in a private service at Althorp House, her family's home in Northamptonshire. Elton John sang his reworked version of Candle in the Wind, including the lyrics "Goodbye England's Rose." Candle in the Wind '97 subsequently became the biggest-selling single of all time.
- Meanwhile, in Kolkata, India, many people gathered to pay homage to Mother Teresa, who'd died the day before aged 87.
