10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 22 September:

  1. The scientist Michael Faraday was born on this date in 1791. He discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and laws of electrolysis, and it was thanks to him that Electricity became viable for use in technology. Faraday also discovered benzene and invented an early form of the Bunsen burner.
  2. In 1735, Sir Robert Walpole became the first prime minister to live at Ten Downing Street, five minutes’ walk from the Houses of Parliament.
  3. Britain’s first TV commercial, for Gibbs SR Toothpaste, was aired on the new commercial ITV channel on this date in 1955. The rules said that only 6 minutes of ads were allowed each hour.
  4. In 1761, King George III was crowned. George was German and never spoke much English.
  5. In 2003, David Hempleman-Adams became the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean in an open-air, wicker-basket Hot air balloon.
  6. In 1997, Esther and Yossi Dvir reported that hens on their farm laid more Eggs if they played classical music to them.
  7. In 1827, the angel Moroni reportedly revealed the golden tablets containing the Book of Mormon to Joseph Smith. Smith's English translation of their strange hieroglyphics became the foundation for the Mormon religion.
  8. In 1656, the first all-woman American jury sat in Patuxent, Maryland. They acquitted a woman accused of murdering her child.
  9. In 1960, Presidential Candidate John F. Kennedy shared a new idea with students at the University of Michigan: the Peace Corps, a government-funded volunteer organisation for young Americans to serve overseas in developing countries. "One person can make a difference, and every person must try to help others to help themselves." By the end of the first year, programs were set up in 13 countries with 750 volunteers. Since its inception, about 125,000 have served, creating worldwide hope and making a difference.
  10. In 1990, Steve Woodmore became the world's fastest talker when he set the record at 595 words in 56.01 seconds (637.4 wpm).
