1. In 2010, Mike Edwards, 62, cellist and founding member of Electric Light Orchestra, died when a large bale of hay rolled down a hill and collided with the van he was driving.
2. King Richard the First (The Lionheart) was crowned in Westminster on this date in 1189. Before his coronation he knew little about England since he'd spent most of his life in France. He spent the vast majority of his ten-year reign abroad, devoting himself to the Crusades.
3. On this date in 1752, England adopted the Gregorian Calendar, so today's date became September 14^th. Superstitious people rioted, thinking the government had stolen 11 days of their lives.
4. In 2005, a watermelon grown by Lloyd Bright was confirmed as the world's largest, weighing 268.8lb.
5. In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered bread mould had accidentally contaminated a staphylococcus culture and stopped the bacteria's growth. "Nature makes Penicillin," he said. "I just found it."
6. In 1965, residents of Exeter, New Hampshire, including two police officers, watched a UFO above their town.
7. In 1935, Sir Malcolm Campbell became the first person to drive a car over 300 miles an hour. He drove his Bluebird Special on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah at a speed of 304.331 MPH.
8. In 1955, Bill Haley and the Comets turned down their first invitation to tour outside the USA because they were afraid of flying. The Australian offer of $2,000 for 15 dates wasn't enough to get them on a plane.
9. In 1966, Captain John Ridgway and Sergeant Chay Blyth of the Parachute Regiment rowed into Inishmore on the isle of Aran, thus completing a 91 day row across the Atlantic in the English Rose III.
10. In 1997, researchers in Vienna announced the finding that ugly men smell more attractive than handsome ones.
