10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 9 April:
- Born this date in 1806 was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, designer of first transatlantic steamer and the Great Western Railway. He built the Box Tunnel in Wiltshire, which is laid out so that the sun’s rays only penetrate it once a year – on his birthday.
- This date in 1932 was celebrated as the birthday of Cheeta, a male chimpanzee famous for appearing in Tarzan films. Although he was actually born in the wild in Liberia some months prior, his birthday was celebrated today because it is the date he arrived in New York. Cheeta became the longest-lived chimpanzee when he reached 64 in 1996.
- This date in 1626 Francis Bacon's goose was cooked (or not), when he died of typhoid at the age of 65. He contracted the disease after eating a goose which had been stuffed with snow to see if it had been preserved from decay.
- In 1731, the inciting incident in War of Jenkins Ear took place. Robert Jenkins, British captain of the brig Rebecca, had his ship boarded off Havana by Spanish coast guards, who cut off his ear.
- In 1981, Nature magazine published the longest-ever word scientific word, all 207,000 letters of it.
- In 1859, after serving a two-year apprenticeship, Samuel Clemens, better known to us as Mark Twain, was licensed as a pilot of Mississippi steamboats in the District of St. Louis.
- This date in 1913 was opening day at Ebbets Field, the new home of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The day was beset by teething troubles; fans had to wait an hour to get in because nobody had brought a key, and there was no Flag to salute for the National Anthem. To cap it all, the Dodgers lost today's match to Philadelphia.
- In 1999, today was the 99th day of 1999.
- In 1912 Titanic left Queenstown, Ireland on her fateful journey bound for New York.
- In 1998 a 32-year-old German man died when a camp site lavatory in Montabaur, south of Bonn exploded when he tried to light a cigarette, blasting him through a closed window. Police said the explosion was caused by leaking gas from the septic tank or a defective natural gas pipe.
The Power of Love
Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic ordering and the significance of chance encounters. She believes there's a spiritual explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.
A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.
Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.
When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
