11 January

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 11 January:

  1. In 1773, the first museum in America opened in Charleston South Carolina.
  2. It was on this date in 2007 that JK Rowling completed the 7th novel in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
  3. In 1770, the first shipment of Rhubarb was sent to the US from London. Benjamin Franklin sent it to John Bartram in Philadelphia.
  4. In 1813, the first Pineapples were planted in Hawaii.
  5. In 1935 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to Oakland, California.
  6. In 2014, X-ray astronomers found evidence of a Black Hole at the centre of a dwarf galaxy gobbling up a star; the first such event ever filmed.
  7. The first state lottery in England was held on this date in 1569. Lots were sold at the West Door of St Paul's Cathedral in London, at 10 shillings each; there were 40,000 for sale, and each lot could be subdivided into smaller units. Prizes were £20,000 and £30,000. Critics claimed that it encouraged crime.
  8. In 1949, the Los Angeles Open golf tournament was won by Lloyd Mangrum, who admitted that he’d been wearing a lucky pair of pyjamas under his Trousers. However, as the first snowfall recorded in LA was also on this day, the original motive for wearing them may have been to keep warm!
  9. In 1520 Henry VIII met Anne of Cleves for the first time in Rochester. He’d agreed to marry her on the basis of reports of her beauty and a flattering portrait. She failed to meet his expectations, though, and he dismissed her as “no better than a Flanders mare”. Her first impression of him was not recorded. The wedding went ahead, but the marriage was never consummated and was later annulled.
  10. In 1921, the first women to serve as jurors in Britain were sworn in at the Old Bailey. About half of the 50 summoned were excused. Mrs Taylor Bumstead, the only woman on her jury, was elected as the first forewoman.

The Power of Love

Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic  ordering  and the significance of chance  encounters. She believes there's a spiritual  explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into  mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of  her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
