- It was on this date in 49 BC that Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon to invade Italy. As he crossed the river, he said "iacta alea est" (the die is cast) knowing his action constituted a declaration of war against Pompey. This gave rise to the expression ‘‘crossing the Rubicon’’, meaning passing a point of no return.
- In 1918 women got the vote in Britain and the USA – provided they were married and over 30.
- In 2001 a large piece of the chalk cliff at Beachy Head collapsed into the sea.
- In 1863 The London Underground railway was opened by Prime Minister Gladstone. The first route of the Metropolitan Railway went from Paddington to Farringdon Street stopping at seven stations. The trains ran every 15 minutes; the journey took 33 minutes. It carried 30,000 passengers on its first day, in spite of Punch magazine’s assessment of it as “the sewer railway” and a preacher who said that it was “a road down into Hell to meet the Devil”.
- In 1994 Lorena Bobbitt went on trial in Manassas, VA, accused of cutting off her husband's penis with a kitchen knife. She was acquitted by reason of temporary insanity.
- In another trial in 1457 in Savigny, France, a sow was convicted of infanticide and sentenced to death. Later, six piglets were arrested for complicity.
- In 1946 the first man made contact with the Moon was made by the US Army from Belmar, NJ as radar signals were bounced off the lunar surface.
- In 1001 At 10:01 AM, the time and date briefly reached perfect symmetry: 10:01, 10/01, 1001.
- In 1946 King Zog of Albania was deposed.
- In 1949 The Radio Corporation of America announced a new music format – the 7-inch, 45 rpm phonograph record.

The Power of Love
Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic ordering and the significance of chance encounters. She believes there's a spiritual explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.
A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.
Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.
When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
