10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 9th January:
A manatee |
- In 1962 a Chicken kicked over a glass panelled beehive in a New York TV studio during a live broadcast, freeing 2,000 bees. The presenter was stung on the hand, but no other injuries were reported.
- Another TV mishap occurred in 1997 on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Guest Ashley MacIsaac decided to provide a swift demonstration of what a Scotsman wears beneath his kilt. FYI, not a lot. MacIsaac refused to re-record the show, so the segment aired with a strategically placed electronic blur. (Spoilsports!)
- In 1997 most of the cast of the Pantomime at the Mayfair Southampton, Snow White, were laid low by a flu epidemic. All the dwarfs caught it, except for one – Sneezy.
- On the same day, on the other side of the Atlantic, a different kind of bug was causing mayhem. A Computer bug caused 100,000 Skytel pagers to beep simultaneously for half an hour.
- In 1868 the last convict transportation ship, Hougomont, arrived at Fremantle, Western Australia.
- In 1493 Christopher Columbus saw a Manatee for the first time and thought it was a mermaid. “distinctly saw three mermaids,” he wrote in his journal, “which rose well out of the sea; but they are not so beautiful as they are said to be, for their faces had some masculine traits.”
- In 1989 a rabbi revoked the kosher food license of a Tiberias hotel because they allowed a couple to have sex in a Helicopter while hovering above the hotel pool during a party.
- In 1799 William Pitt the Younger introduced an income tax of two shillings in the pound. He was forced to do so by the Napoleonic Wars. It’s unlikely the British public will ever forgive him.
- In 1902, New York State introduced a bill to outlaw flirting in public.
- In 1968, heavy rain combined with a sudden freeze caused Big Ben to freeze solid at 2.58 pm and stop for four hours.

The Power of Love
Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic ordering and the significance of chance encounters. She believes there's a spiritual explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.
A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.
Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.
When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
