3 October: Gore Vidal Quotes

This date in 1925 saw the birth of Gore Vidal, American writer known for his epigrammatic wit, erudition, and patrician manner. His plays include The Best Man, A Visit To A Small Planet and Weekend. Here are 10 quotes:

  1. At any given moment, public opinion is a chaos of superstition, misinformation, and prejudice.
  2. Politics is made up of two words: "Poli," which is Greek for "many," and "tics," which are bloodsucking insects.
  3. True wisdom is to know the extent of what you don't know quite as well as you know what you do know.
  4. Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.
  5. When anyone says to me, 'Can you keep a secret?' I say, 'Why should I, if you can't?'
  6. Since no one can ever know for certain whether or not his own view of life is the correct one, it is absolutely impossible for him to know if someone else's is the wrong one.
  7. Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so.
  8. Never offend an enemy in a small way.
  9. Those who have not undergone minor disasters are usually being held in reserve for something major.
  10. I never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television.
