6 June: Six

As today is the sixth day of the sixth month, here are ten things you might not know about the number six.

  1. Six is the smallest positive integer which is not a prime number or a square, and is the only number which is both the sum and the product of three consecutive positive numbers (1+2+3=6 and 1x2x3=6).
  2. The classical Greek word for six is "Hexa" which is how we get hexagon (a six sided shape).
  3. The Latin word for six is "sex" from which we get sextet (a group of six musicians) and sextuplets (six babies born in one delivery).
  4. 6 is the atomic number of carbon.
  5. According to the Old Testament, God took six days to create the world, making human beings on the sixth day. In Judaism the Star of David has six points; in Islam, there are six articles of belief, and in Taoism, the hexagrams of the I-Ching have six lines.
  6. A standard Guitar has six strings, and most woodwind instruments have six holes or keys.
  7. A volleyball team has six players; an ice hockey team has six players on the ice at any one time and it is the number of substitutes allowed in a game of soccer. In both American and Canadian football, 6 points are awarded for a touchdown.
  8. In less active games, a standard die has six sides (a cube); six is the highest number on on side of a domino.
  9. Number Six is the main character in the TV Series The Prisoner.
  10. In numerology, six represents caring, nurture, protection, healing and sacrifice. The number 6 personality is the archetypal mother figure. On the negative side, they can be too meddling and intrusive, or can become a doormat. Six is associated with the planets Venus and Uranus, The Lovers Tarot Card, Friday and the colours Indigo/Purple and Green.
