7 October: We Will Rock You

On this date in 1977 Queen’s We Will Rock You/We are the Champions was Released by EMI Records. 10 facts:

  1. We Will Rock You was written by Brian May and is on Queen’s 1977 album News of the World.

  2. The inspiration for the song came from a concert Queen performed during the A Day at the Races Tour at Stafford's Bingley Hall. When the band left the stage, the audience chanted You'll Never Walk Alone rather than clapping. May later had a dream about a song the audience could participate in.

  3. There are no Drums in the Queen recording. The only instrument in it is a 30 second Guitar solo by May at the end.

  4. It may sound as if there are thousands of people stomping and clapping but there were only six – the four members of Queen and two other people, one of which was a tea lady called Betty.

  5. How did they get it to sound like huge numbers of people? By using a technique called non-harmonic reverberation. Brian May's degree in astrophysics helped. He figured out what you’d be hearing if a huge crowd was stamping and clapping. The varying distances the people would be away from you cause a slight delay effect, so the sounds were overlaid with slight delays, all in prime numbers.

  6. At the 2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremony, Taylor and May performed this song with the British Pop star Jessie J.

  7. On the album, We Will Rock You is immediately followed by We Are the Champions. Often radio DJs would play both songs one after the other without interruption, and they would be played that way live as well.

  8. The video was filmed in the back garden of Roger Taylor's mansion. The band are seen lip-synching the song, hand clapping with gloves and foot stomping on a frozen ground. At the time, Taylor had literally just bought the house and the sale wasn’t quite complete, so they weren’t allowed to go inside the house.

  9. In 2004, this was used in a UK commercial for Pepsi. The ad featured Brian May, Roger Taylor, Britney Spears, Beyoncé and Pink dressed up as ancient Romans.

  10. In 2000 the boy band Five wanted to cover the track. They approached the remaining members of Queen. Not only did they say yes, but also Brian May and Roger Taylor agreed to play on it. This version, which was credited to Five and Queen, spent one week at the top of the UK singles chart.
