11 May

10 weird and wonderful things which happened on 11 May:

  1. This date in 1811 saw the birth of Chang and Eng Bunker, Siamese-born twins who toured the US as part of a circus act for Barnum and Bailey Circus. They lived full lives, marrying and fathering 21 children between them.

  2. In 1939, Siam changed its named to Thailand.

  3. In 868, the first dated printed book was produced in China. Printed by Wang Chieh, the Diamond Sutra was a Buddhist text made up of six sheets pasted together and made into a roll.

  4. In 1812, the Waltz was introduced into English ballrooms. Many at the time considered this new dance to be disgusting and immoral.

  5. In 2018, Scientists at MetService recorded a wave measuring 23.8 metres (78 ft) high in the Southern Ocean near Campbell Island, New Zealand, making it the largest wave ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere.

  6. In 2011, Nepalese Sherpa Apa Sherpa climbed Mount Everest for a record 21st time.

  7. In 1659, the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony banned all celebrations of Christmas in the New World, declaring it a Pagan festival of superstition and "a great dishonnor (sic) of God." On the same date in 1682 the law was repealed.

  8. In 1964, The Rolling Stones went for lunch at The Grand Hotel, Bristol, where they were staying during a UK tour. They were refused entry to the restaurant because they were not wearing jackets and ties.

  9. In 1894, during a severe hailstorm at Vicksburg, USA, a huge hailstone was found to have a solid centre, containing a piece of alabaster measuring nearly 2 cm across. During the same storm, eight miles to the east, a small Turtle (15 x 20 cm) encased in ice, also fell with the hail.

  10. Dick Dalley, 65, retired on this date in 2001. He was the last of his kind: the world's last swanherd. He had taken care of Britain's largest colony of mute Swans, in Dorset, for 40 years.

The Power of Love

Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic  ordering  and the significance of chance  encounters. She believes there's a spiritual  explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into  mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of  her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.
