18 March: 77

Today is the 77th day of the year, so here are 10 things you might not know about the number 77:

  1. 77 is the atomic number of iridium, a chemical element with the symbol Ir. Iridium is a hard, brittle, silvery-white metal, considered to be the second-densest element. It is the most corrosion-resistant metal, even at temperatures as high as 2000 °C.
  2. The Gospel of Luke lists 77 generations from Adam to Jesus.
  3. 77 Sunset Strip is an American private detective drama series created by Roy Huggins and starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Roger Smith, Richard Long and Edd Byrnes.
  4. Interstate 77 is a highway which runs between Cleveland, Ohio and Columbia, South Carolina.
  5. In music, there is an American rock band called The 77's, and a Spanish hard rock band called 77. Matt Kennon, Nude Beach and Talking Heads have all released albums entitled 77.
  6. In London, the 77 bus route runs from Waterloo Station to Tooting Station.
  7. In World War II, 77 was used as a password at the border between Sweden and Norway. The Swedish for 77 is tricky to pronounce and so it was easy for the border guards to tell whether the person was a native Swedish speaker or not.
  8. 77 degrees kelvin is the boiling point of nitrogen.
  9. 10-77 is the New York City Fire Department's code for a fire in a high rise block of flats.
  10. In numerology, 77 is adventurous, spiritual and sensual. It enjoys interacting with people with a different outlook such as different age groups, races, education levels and opinions. The characteristics of the person are likely to include charisma, curiosity, wit, scientific analysis, and intuition. Personal freedom is very important to 77s. In some systems of numerology linked to the alphabet, the letters in "Christ" add up to 77.
