January 10th: First Tintin comic strip

The comic strip Hergé's Adventures of Tintin appeared for the first time on this date in 1929. Some things you may not know about Tintin:

  1. At first, Tintin didn't have a quiff. This came later, when he got into a fast car and his quiff was created by the wind.
  2. Tintin's dog, Snowy, is a fox terrier.
  3. The thing that scares Snowy most is Spiders.
  4. Tintin's age is never specified, nor whether "Tintin" is his first or last name.
  5. Tintin's occupation is given as a reporter, but only in the first adventure is he ever seen actually doing any reporting. Mostly he seems to be a detective, explorer, or a crusader. His career was based on that of the French foreign correspondent Albert Londres.
  6. Tintin's adventures took him to the surface of the Moon 16 years before Neil Armstrong got there.
  7. The strip was originally written in French, but by 2007, had been translated into more than 50 languages.
  8. In 2006, Tinton was awarded the International Campaign for Tibet's Light of Truth Award by the Dalai Lama, because of the adventure, Tintin in Tibet.
  9. Aside from Tintin and Snowy, the characters which appeared in the greatest number of the adventures were Thompson and Thompson, the bumbling twin detectives. The 1980s band, the Thompson Twins, were named after these characters.
  10. Captain Haddock's first name is Archibald, and Professor Calculus's first name is Cuthbert.
