21 April: 111

Today is day 111 of 2025. 10 fun facts about the number 111:

  1. 111 is the atomic number of Roentgenium, a synthetic chemical element; with the symbol Rg. It is extremely radioactive and can only be created in a laboratory.
  2. 111 Ate is an Asteroid discovered by the German-American astronomer C. H. F. Peters in 1870, and named after Ate, the goddess of mischief and destruction in Greek mythology.
  3. 111 is the debut studio album recorded by American dance duo Her Majesty & the Wolves. It was released on 11 July 2011 in the UK.
  4. In London, the 111 Bus runs from Heathrow Central Bus Station to Cromwell Road Bus Station.
  5. In Cricket, 111 is said to be an unlucky score, and to combat the bad luck, spectators must lift their feet off the floor. Warding off the bad luck is a problem, therefore, for the umpire, who can’t sit down and do that. Some umpires, including international umpire David Shepherd, hop, shuffle or jiggle to negate the ill fortune. A score of 111 is sometimes called a Nelson, after Admiral Nelson, who allegedly had "One Eye, One Arm and One Leg" at the end of his life. This is in fact untrue. Nelson never lost a leg. Multiples of 111 are called a double Nelson (222), triple Nelson (333), quadruple Nelson (444; also known as a salamander).
  6. 111 is the emergency telephone number in New Zealand and also a free-to-call single non-emergency number medical helpline operating in EnglandScotland and Wales.
  7. The A111 is a road in England which runs from Palmers Green to Potters Bar.
  8. Swissair Flight 111 was Swissair’s deadliest air accident, which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5 mi; 4 nmi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the small fishing and tourist communities of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater, killing all 215 passengers and 14 crew members. Also lost was a Picasso painting worth $1.5 million.
  9. The Roman numeral for 111 is CXI. In Binary it’s 1101111.
  10. In numerology, 111 is a creative and independent number. 111 won't let itself be slotted into a team member role, except as a leader who is free to lead the team in their own creative way. The person is a great communicator, likely to come up with new ways of doing things, and to inspire others.

Beta

(Combat Team Series #2)

Steff was abducted by an evil alien race, the Orbs, at fourteen. Used as a weapon for years, he eventually escapes, but his problems are just beginning. How does a man support himself when his only work experience is a paper round and using an Orb bio-integrated gun?

Warlord is an alien soldier who knows little but war. When the centuries-old conflict which ravaged his planet ends, he seeks out another world where his skills are still relevant. There are always wars on Earth, it seems. However, none of Earth's powerful armies want him.

Natalie has always wanted to visit England and sees a chance to do so while using her martial arts skills, but there are sacrifices she must make in order to fulfil her dream.

Maggie resorted to crime to fund her sister's medical care. She uses her genetic variant abilities to gain access to the rooms of wealthy hotel guests. The Ballards look like rich pickings, but they are not what they seem. When Maggie targets them, little does she know that she is walking into a trap.

Hotel owner Hamilton Lonsdale puts together a combat team to pit against those of other multi-millionaires. He recruits Warlord, Natalie, Maggie and Steff along with a trained gorilla, a probability-altering alien, a stockbroker whose work of art proved to be much more than he'd bargained for, a marketing officer who can create psionic forcefields, a teleporting member of the landed gentry, and a socially awkward fixer. This is Combat Team Beta.

Steff never talks about his time with the Orbs, until he finds a woman who lived through it, too. Steff believes he has finally found happiness, but it is destined to be short-lived. He is left with an unusual legacy which he and Team Beta struggle to comprehend; including why something out there seems determined to destroy it.
