I,
or i, is the ninth letter and the third vowel letter of the Latin
alphabet.
It
developed from the Phoenician hieroglyph for an arm, which in turn
was adapted by the Greeks into their letter iota.
I
is the fifth most commonly used letter in the English Language.
The
dot over a lower case i is called a tittle.
It
acquired the dot for the same reason the upper case I which is the
first person pronoun became capitalised. It was so it wouldn’t get
lost or misinterpreted in handwritten manuscripts before the age of
printing. The capitalised "I" was first used in about 1250
in the northern and midland dialects of England, according to the
Chambers Dictionary of Etymology, but didn't become established in
the south of England until the 1700s.
