On this date in 2014 One World Trade Center in New York City opened. 10 things you might not know about this building:
It stands on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center and was previously known as The Freedom Tower. It is part of an effort to memorialize and rebuild following the destruction of the original World Trade Center complex.
It’s the tallest building in the USA, and indeed, in the Western Hemisphere. It stands at 1,776 feet, a direct reference to the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. The building’s height without the spire is 1,362 feet, the height of the original South Tower, while its height with the observation deck is 1,368 feet, corresponding to the original North Tower’s height.
One World Trade Center was designed by David Childs.
Construction for the building started in 2006. On April 30, 2012, and on May 10, 2013, the last piece of the skyscraper's antenna was put in place.
It was designed to be the safest office building in the world, incorporating lessons learned from the destruction of the Twin Towers. The safety features include high-strength concrete, which can withstand seven times more pressure than standard concrete, reinforcement steel bars, which are significantly longer than normal, fireproofing and additional staircase for first responders.
It has 73 elevators including five express ones, which can travel at more than 36.5 kilometres per hour. While not the fastest in the world (Taipei 101 has that), they are 25% faster than those of the original Twin Towers.
There’s a tree planted nearby which survived the attack on 9/11. It is known as the “Survivor Tree.” It was recovered from the debris and re-planted.
The building has a cubic base and its edges form eight isosceles triangles. Near its middle, the tower forms a perfect octagon.
One World Trade has 103 floors, 71 of which are office space. Tenants include the U.S. General Service Administration and magazine publisher Condé Nast.
In September 2013, three BASE jumpers parachuted off the under-construction tower. The three men and one accomplice on the ground surrendered to authorities and received a fine and community service.
