2 March: Facts about March

Ten things you might not know about the month of March.

  1. March was the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the Roman god of war.
  2. Birthstones for people born in March are aquamarine and bloodstone, which both symbolise courage.
  3. The birth flower for people born in March is the Daffodil.
  4. Native American tribes named the moons of months after things they observed in nature at the time of year. Native American names for the moon of March include Buffalo Dropping their Calves, Eyes are Sore From Bright Snow Moon, Strawberry Moon, Little Frog Moon and Moon When the Leaves Break Forth.
  5. The expression, "mad as a March Hare" comes from the fact that March is the rutting season for these animals.
  6. In weather lore, March is said to come in like a Lion and go out like a lamb - meaning that the weather is rough at the beginning of the month and calmer towards the end. Farmers liked the March winds as they'd dry out the fields ready for planting. A wet March foretells a poor harvest.
  7. Couples who marry in March may never settle in one place. "Married when March winds shrill and roar, your home will be on a distant shore", says one folk saying. Another is "If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know."
  8. Observances and awareness campaigns which happen in March include Cataracts, caffeine, colorectal cancer, ethics, foot health, frozen food, hamburgers and pickles, listening, music in schools, chronic fatigue syndrome, eye donors, flour, frozen food, haemophilia, kidneys, Peanuts, poetry, potholes, Umbrellas and women's history.
  9. In the Bulgarian language, March is the only month with a feminine name.
  10. It is said to be unlucky to start a journey or begin important work during the last quarter of the Moon in March.
