October 21: Alphonse de Lamartine

This date in 1790 saw the birth of Alphonse de Lamartine, French poet and politician. Here are some of his thoughts on people and dogs, love, fiction and truth.

  1. Only one being is wanting, and your whole world is bereft of people.
  2. To love for the sake of being loved is human, but to love for the sake of loving is angelic.
  3. There is no man more complete than the one who travelled a lot, who changed the shape of his thoughts and his life twenty times.
  4. Love is the enchanted dawn of every heart.
  5. The more I see of the representatives of the people, the more I admire my dogs.
  6. We don't have two hearts, one for animals and one for humans; we have one heart or we don't have any.
  7. There is a woman at the beginning of all great things.
  8. Let us savour the swift delights of the most beautiful of our days!
  9. Fiction is the microscope of truth.
  10. When a dog is in your life, there is always a reason to laugh.
