8 June: John Everett Millais

John Everett Millais, artist and founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was born on this date in 1829. 10 facts about him:

  1. He was born in Southampton but his family were from Jersey, so he spent much of his childhood there and loved the island for the rest of his life.

  2. He was a child prodigy in art. Encouraged by his mother, he was nine years old when he began studying at Sass's Art School, and eleven when he was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools. He was their youngest ever student. He won a silver medal at the Society of Arts at the age of nine, a silver medal at 13 for drawing from the antique, and a gold medal at 16 for his painting The Tribe of Benjamin Seizing the Daughters of Shiloh.

  3. At the Royal Academy, he met William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The three shared the opinion that Raphael and the later Renaissance tradition were not the be all and end all when it came to art, as the Academy taught. The trio thought that earlier artists like Jan van Eyck and Albrecht Dürer were much more inspiring. So, they formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood at his family home in London, at 83 Gower Street (now number 7).

  4. One painting of his which was especially controversial was Christ in the House of His Parents, which depicted the Holy Family at work in a carpenter's workshop. I mean, how DARE he suggest that Jesus might actually have come from a working class background?

  5. Another of his famous paintings is Ophelia. His model, Elizabeth Siddal, was required to lie in a bath of Water with candles burning underneath so she would stay warm while Millais produced a picture of a drowned woman.

  6. Millais didn’t just produce fine art paintings. He was also a book illustrator. He illustrated the works of Anthony Trollope and Tennyson.

  7. Millais became friends with a critic called John Ruskin who was in favour of the Pre-Raphaelite style. Ruskin was married to a woman called Effie. They had been married for several years the marriage had never been consummated. Effie became a model for Millais and they fell in love. Effie’s parents had realised their daughter’s marriage to Ruskin wasn’t right and applied for the marriage to be annulled, after which Effie married Millais. He had a better idea of what was expected of a husband, and they went on to have eight children.

  8. Another very recognisable painting is Bubbles, a painting of a small boy looking at a soap bubble. It’s well known because Millais allowed it to be used as an advert for Pears soap. The original title was A Child's World, and the model was his grandson, William Milbourne James, aged five. James grew up to become an admiral in the Royal Navy, but could never quite shake off the association with the advert. He was known as "Bubbles" for the rest of his life.

  9. In July 1885, Queen Victoria made him a baronet, of Palace Gate, in the parish of St Mary Abbot, Kensington, in the county of Middlesex, and of Saint Ouen, in the Island of Jersey. He was the first artist to be honoured with a hereditary title.

  10. In 1896, Millais was elected President of the Royal Academy. However, when he was elected, he was already suffering from throat cancer, and he died just six months later at the age of 67.

7 June: Vesta

An eight-day long festival called the Vestalia began today in ancient Rome in honour of the hearth Goddess Vesta. Here are 10 things you might not know about Vesta and her festival.

  1. Vesta was the daughter of Saturn and Ops, and like most of her siblings, was swallowed by Saturn to foil a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him. When Jupiter (who’d been hidden by his mother so escaped being eaten) grew up and released his siblings, Vesta, having been swallowed most recently, was the first to be released. Hence she is seen as the oldest and youngest of the Titans simultaneously.

  2. Her Greek equivalent is Hestia.

  3. Vesta was beautiful and sought after as a wife by Neptune and Phoebus. They fought over her, but she wasn’t interested in either of them. In fact, she didn’t want to marry at all and asked Jupiter to let her stay a virgin. He agreed and so she got the job of taking care of the home and hearth.

  4. She was very important to the Romans as in Roman cities there was no easy way to make a Fire. Keeping the home fire burning was therefore a vital task. Vesta’s temple with its constantly burning fire took on great significance. This fire would be extinguished and re-lit on 1st March, the Roman new year, but if it went out at any other time it was seen as an omen of disaster for Rome.

  5. This meant that a dedicated work force was needed to tend the fire and make sure it didn’t go out. This job was performed by attendants known as Vestal Virgins. They were women who made a 30 year vow of chastity and devoted themselves to tending the fire and also to the study of rituals that male priests were not allowed access to. Any Vestal Virgin who broke her vows would be flogged in public or buried alive.

  6. The inner sanctum of Vesta’s temple wasn’t usually open to the public, but during the Vestalia, older women could go in, provided they took their sandals off. Women celebrated the festivals with processions, ceremonies, sacrifices and cleansing rituals.

  7. Vesta wasn’t often depicted in human form but rather was represented by a flame. When she was given a human image it would be that of a fully clothed woman, sometimes with a Donkey. Why a donkey? Because according to one myth, she once attended a party thrown by Cybele. During the party, Priapus attempted to sneak up on Vesta in order to rape her, and she and the other gods were alerted to his presence by a donkey braying. Donkeys were also used to turn millstones and therefore had an everyday association with the hearth and baking.

  8. Roman mythology is generally full of gods and goddesses fighting and quarrelling with each other. Vesta was unique in that she didn’t get involved in any of the family feuds.

  9. Romans often invoked Vesta along with Janus, especially at weddings. Vesta was the threshold and Janus the doorway, so both gods would be present at a marriage.

  10. Vesta was so important to the spiritual life of Romans that hers was one of the last pagan cults standing when Christianity took hold. The cult of Vesta remained active until Christian emperor Theodosius I forcibly disbanded it in AD 391.

  9. Other TV appearances included being a regular on the music hall show The Good Old Days and as a panellist on talent show New Faces, where his comments were usually nicer than those of fellow judges Tony Hatch and Mickie Most. In the late 1940s, Askey participated in a BBC radio show called How Do You Do? in which listeners could write into the BBC and ask him to come and broadcast a show from their homes.

  10. He was the subject of This Is Your Life twice, and Desert Island Discs four times, meaning he ties with David Attenborough for being the guest on that show the most times.

4 June: The Battle of Magenta

The Battle of Magenta occurred on this date in 1859. 10 things you might not know:

  1. The battle was fought between Napoleon III with 54,000 troops and 58,000 Austrian troops under General Franz Gyulai.

  2. Magenta is a town in the Lombardy region of Italy just west of Milan. Its name comes from Marcus Maxentius, a Roman general and emperor who had his headquarters there.

  3. At the time, Magenta was part of the Austrian empire. Italy was made up of a number of small states, not yet unified into the country we know today. Camillo Benso, conte di Cavour was the ruler of Piedmont in Northern Italy. He was ambitious and wanted to conquer the neighbouring regions of Lombardy and Venetia. There was a problem, though. Those places were controlled by the Austrians.

  4. Meanwhile, Napoleon III wanted to go down in history as a mighty conqueror like his uncle, Napoleon Bonaparte. He and Cavour decided to join forces in order to help each other achieve their ambitions.

  5. Napoleon moved his troops to Italy by train, making it the first mass movement of troops by rail.

  6. Neither of the two generals expected a battle that day. Napoleon didn’t think the Austrians would have any significant forces in position to block his advance. He thought the Austrian army was further south, and that he had time to get his own troops into position at his leisure by the end of the day.

  7. Gyulay wasn’t expecting a battle either and had actually intended to give his troops a day off.

  8. While in gaming terms this battle was what would be called a random encounter and fought only by a fraction of each army, more than 4,500 French soldiers were killed or wounded and 5,700 were killed or wounded on the Austrian side. The result was a narrow victory for France.

  9. Napoleon and his army went on to enter Milan, and went on to take Brescia, Florence, Parma and Modena. Gyulay withdrew his army to the Chiese River east of Milan, and resigned on 16 June.

  10. A red aniline dye created soon afterwards by a French chemist was named Magenta to commemorate Napoleon’s victory.

3 June: Lacrosse

On this date in 1876 Lacrosse was introduced in Britain and Canada. 10 things you might not know about the game of lacrosse.

  1. Lacrosse is the oldest sport in North America, having been played by Native American tribes since the early 17th century and before. They called the game “baggataway”.

  2. The name lacrosse came from French Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf, as he watched Huron tribesmen play the game in what is now Ontario. He called it la crosse, "the stick" in French. The missionaries didn’t approve of the game, because it was violent and involved betting. Betting was an integral part of the game. Each player was required to give up a personal item such as a trinket or a knife, or even a horse before the game began. These items were on display during the game and awarded to the winners in each quarter.

  3. To the Native Americans, it was more than just a sport. Young men played it as part of their training for war, and it was sometimes used to settle disputes. There was also a spiritual aspect, a ceremonial ritual in which the players were giving thanks to the Creator or Master. In those days, a game of lacrosse involved teams of anything up to a thousand men on a field several miles long, and a game could last several days. The first lacrosse sticks were essentially giant wooden spoons with no netting, and the ball would be made from wood or deerskin stuffed with hair. After the game there would be a ceremonial dance and a feast.

  4. In 1763, Ojibwas used the game to capture a fort. They invited the British soldiers at Fort Michilimackinac (now Mackinaw City, Michigan) to watch a game. As the soldiers were distracted by the game, the players worked their way closer and closer to the fort’s entrance, burst in and massacred the troops.

  5. The first official written rules were written in the mid 19th century by a Canadian dentist called Dr. William George Beers. The first official lacrosse club, the Montreal Lacrosse Club, was founded in 1856.

  6. Lacrosse is the official state sport of Maryland and the official summer sport of Canada.

  7. Lacrosse was included in the Olympic Games in 1904 and 1908, though never since, at least at time of writing. It will be contested at the 2028 Olympic Games in the lacrosse sixes format.

  8. Talking of formats, there are several different ones, all with different rules and equipment. These include field lacrosse, women's lacrosse (first played in Scotland in 1890), box lacrosse, lacrosse sixes and intercrosse.

  9. Lacrosse has been described as “the fastest game on two feet”. The average player can run 3-5 miles during a single game and it’s not unknown for the ball to travel at 80mph during a shot. In 2013, a record was set by Mike Sawyer who shot a ball at 114mph. The lacrosse goal is 6 feet high and 6 feet wide, making it one of the largest goals in sports. This means the goal defender has to be fast and agile in order to defend it.

  10. The governing body is World Lacrosse, which is the only international sport organisation to recognise Native American tribes as sovereign nations.

Today is day 153 of the year, so 10 facts about the number 153.

  1. The British Rail Class 153 Super Sprinter are single-coach diesel-hydraulic railcars intended for service on rural branch lines.

  2. There was also a 153 series of trains in use in Japan from 1958 until 1983.

  3. The third time Jesus appeared after his resurrection, it was to the disciples, who’d been fishing all night and had caught nothing. As soon as Jesus arrived on the scene, they caught 153 fish (Gospel of John (chapter 21:1–14)). Jerome, a fourth century A.D. Catholic priest and theologian suggested that these represented all species of Fish and the meaning was that there is room in the church for all races. 153 could also be seen as a symbol of God’s abundance.

  4. 153 was considered by St. Augustine to represent seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and ten requirements of God.

  5. The A153 is a road entirely in Lincolnshire in the east of England.

  6. 153 Hilda is a large Asteroid discovered by Johann Palisa in 1875, from the Austrian Naval Observatory at Pula, now Croatia. The name was chosen by the astronomer Theodor von Oppolzer, who named it after one of his daughters.

  7. London bus route 153 runs from Finsbury Park Interchange to Liverpool Street Station.

  8. Shakespeare’s sonnet 153 begins: “Cupid laid by his brand and fell asleep: A maid of Dian's this advantage found, And his love-kindling fire did quickly steep; In a cold valley-fountain of that ground.

  9. Untitled #153 is a colour photograph made by American visual artist Cindy Sherman in 1985. In 2010, a print was auctioned for $2.7 million, making it one of the most expensive photographs ever sold. It’s a self-portrait, depicting a woman lying in the ground covered with Mud.

  10. The numerology energy of 153 is tolerant and idealistic. It is a philanthropic energy constantly alert for hints of new ways to help. It is inspiring, creative and appreciates beauty. It is tolerant of ideas, religions, and thoughts contrary to its own.
