17 June: Laura Name Day

In HungaryLithuania and Poland, today is the name day for people called Laura. The name derives from the Latin for the bay laurel plant, which in Ancient Greece and Rome was a symbol of victory, honour or fame. Here are 10 famous Lauras:

Laura Ingalls Wilder

  1. Laura Ashley: Welsh fashion designer who made furnishing materials in the 1950s, expanding the business into clothing design and manufacture in the 1960s. Her style is characterised by Romantic English designs and the use of natural fabrics.
  2. Laura Bush: former first lady of the United States, married to former president George W. Bush.
  3. Saint Laura of Cordoba: Spanish nun who lived in Muslim Spain during the 9th century. She was martyred by Muslims, who put her in a vat of boiling pitch. Her feast day is on 19 October.
  4. Laura Dern: American actress and film maker. Her films include Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart and Jurassic Park.
  5. Laura Ingalls Wilder: American writer, known for the Little House on the Prairie series of children's books, published between 1932 and 1943, based on her childhood in a settler and pioneer family.
  6. Laura Palmer: fictional character in Twin Peaks. She is portrayed by Sheryl Lee. In the original series of Twin Peaks, she is a high school student whose death is the catalyst for the events of the series. She is the protagonist in the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, which depicts the final week of her life.
  7. Laura Branigan: American singer, songwriter, and actress. Her signature song is the 1982 single Gloria, which reached number 2 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number one in Australia and Canada.
  8. Laura Chinchilla Miranda: President of Costa Rica from 2010 to 2014. She was the eighth woman president of a Latin American country and the first woman to become President of Costa Rica.
  9. Laura San Giacomo: American actress. She played Cynthia in Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Kit De Luca in Pretty Woman. She also played Rhetta Rodriguez in Saving Grace and Dr. Grace Confalone on NCIS.
  10. Laura Roslin: fictional character in the Battlestar Galactica series, portrayed by Mary McDonnell. She is the President of the Twelve Colonies and one of the primary characters in the show.
