20 April: Taurus

The Taurus zodiac sign begins today, so here are 10 things you might not know about the sign of Taurus.

  1. Taurus was the first zodiac sign to be established by the ancient Mesopotamians. They called it “The Great Bull of Heaven”. Since the Sun rose in this constellation in the Spring, it was important in the agricultural calendar.
  2. Several ancient civilizations had cults centred around the worship of bulls, including the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and Celts. Not forgetting the idol the Israelites made to worship in the Book of Exodus was a golden calf.
  3. There are two star clusters located within the constellation – the Pleiades (also known as the Seven Sisters) and the Hyades. Both are visible to the naked eye. Its brightest star is Aldebaran, a Red giant, There are two nebulas - the Crab Nebula and the Crystal Ball Nebula.
  4. Taurus is the only constellation crossed by all three of the galactic equator (part of the Milky Way), celestial equator (middle of the celestial sphere), and ecliptic (the path the sun apparently takes through the night sky).
  5. The mythological story comes from the Old Babylonian epic tale, The Epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh spurns the advances of the goddess Ishtar, so she sends Taurus the Bull to kill him. The bull is killed by Gilgamesh's companion Enkidu, who tears off the bull's hind legs and throws them into the sky.
  6. Taurus is an Earth sign, ruled by the planet Venus.
  7. Birthstones for Taureans include sapphire, emerald, jade and opal. Their flowers are Lily of the valley and Violet, and their day of the week is Friday.
  8. In the body, Taurus rules the throat and neck. Other things coming under the ruling influence of this sign are home comforts, industriousness and the senses.
  9. People born under this sign are said to be reliable, patient, methodical and dependable, and value stability in all areas of their life. They tend to be stubborn, strong willed and dislike change. They work hard and hence are often successful. They enjoy the sensual pleasures of life, food, drink and luxury. They love nature and will often settle down in the country.
  10. Famous people born under this sign include George Clooney, Megan Fox, Adele, Billy Joel, David Beckham, Mark Zuckerberg, William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth II.
