January 14: 14

It's the fourteenth day of the month, and, since it's January, the 14th day of the year. Here are 10 facts about the number 14:

  1. 14 is the atomic number of silicon.
  2. In Christianity, Matthew 1:17 states that there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. It is also the number of Stations of the Cross.
  3. In golf, it is the maximum number of clubs a player can have in his (or her) bag.
  4. A woodlouse has 14 legs, as does a creature found in fossils, Hallucigenia.
  5. Edward Elgar composed 14 Enigma Variations.
  6. In literature, it is the number of lines in a sonnet, and is also a one act play by Alice Gerstenberg, first performed in 1919.
  7. In Egyptian mythology, Osiris was torn into 14 pieces by his brother, Set.
  8. In many US and Australian states, 14 is the minimum age a person can work. In the US, it is the age at which a person can drive (with the supervision of an adult over 18 years of age with a valid, clean driver's license, and at least 365 days driving experience). In Italy, a person can drive a 50cc motorbike at 14. In most European countries, it is the age of criminal responsibility.
  9. There are 14 pounds in a stone.
  10. In numerology, the number 14 represents movement, change and transformation. People with 14 in their birth chart love change, excitement and travel. They easily become bored or restless and their moods can change quickly, although they may appear calm on the outside. They are sociable and adaptable and are often talented writers or editors. A love of change means they may change careers and partners too quickly and be natural gamblers and risk takers. They tend to be lucky. They are good at starting projects but finishing them takes willpower.

I write fiction, too! My characters include some British superheroes and a psychic detective. You never know, your new favourite could be here! You won't know unless you look...
