13th March: Hugh Walpole

Today was the birthday of Hugh Walpole, British writer, born in 1884.

  1. Don't play for safety - it's the most dangerous thing in the world.
  2. Happiness comes from... some curious adjustment to life.
  3. In all science, error precedes the truth, and it is better it should go first than last.
  4. The most wonderful of all things in life is the discovery of another human being with whom one's relationship has a growing depth, beauty and joy as the years increase. This inner progressiveness of love between two human beings is a most marvellous thing; it cannot be found by looking for it or by passionately wishing for it. It is a sort of divine accident, and the most wonderful of all things in life.
  5. Tisn't life that matters! 'Tis the courage you bring to it.
  6. The whole secret of life is to be interested in one thing profoundly and a thousand other things well.
  7. The happiest people I have known in this world have been the Saints-and, after these, the men and women who get immediate and conscious enjoyment from little things.
  8. Art and life ought to be hurriedly remarried and brought to live together.
  9. Men are often capable of greater things than they perform.
  10. I almost think there is no wisdom comparable to that of exchanging what is called the realities of life for dreams.
