11 July: Haricot beans

In the French Revolutionary Calendar today is Haricot (Day of the Bean). 10 things you might not know about haricot beans:

  1. The scientific name for a haricot bean is Phaseolus vulgaris.

  2. They are small, dry White beans, smaller than many other types of white bean. They have a slightly flattened oval shape.

  3. In America they are known as navy beans because the US Navy has served them as a staple to its sailors since the mid-1800s.

  4. They are also known as Boston bean, white pea bean, or pea bean.

  5. They are native to the Americas, where they were first domesticated over 5,000 years ago.

  6. Haricot beans are often grown with corn and squash. Termed the “three sisters” these three plants are especially well adapted to growing together. Each one provides an essential function for the others. The squash provides ground cover, keeping weeds away, retains moisture and prevents erosion. Corn provides a stalk for the beans to grow on, and the beans provide nitrogen for the other two.

  7. A 100‐g portion of dried haricot beans is a good source of Copper, protein, vitamin B1, and Iron; it contains 0.5 g of fat, of which 20% is saturated; and 7 g of dietary fibre.

  8. Depending on which cultivar it is, some haricot beans grow on bush like plants and others on vines.

  9. Some researchers have suggested that the introduction of beans has driven population growth in many parts of the world. They say beans may have driven the industrial revolution as much as fossil fuels did. As a cheap and abundant food resource, beans provided the workers with enough food.

  10. In cookery, haricot beans are good at absorbing the flavour of the dish they are served with. They are commonly used to make canned baked beans.

The first in a new series! It has invading aliens, gladiator-style contests, rivalry and romance.

The six richest people in Britain decide to hold a contest to settle the question of which of them is most successful. It will be a gladiator style contest with each entrant fielding a team of ten super-powered combatants. Entrepreneur Llew Powell sets out to put together his team, which includes his former lover, an employee of his company with a fascinating hobby, two refugees from another dimension (a lonely giant and a drunken sailor), two sisters bound together by a promise, a diminutive doctor, a former Tibetan monk initiate and two androids with a history. As the team train together, alliances form, friendships and more develop, while others find the past is not easy to leave behind.

Meanwhile, a ruthless race of aliens has its eyes on the Earth. Already abducting and enslaving humans, they work towards the final invasion which would destroy life on Earth as we know it. Powell’s group, Combat Team Alpha, stumble upon one of the wormholes the aliens use to travel to Earth and witness for themselves the horrors in store if the aliens aren’t stopped. Barely escaping with their lives, they realise there are more important things to worry about than a fighting competition.
