  1. 48 is the atomic number of cadmium (Cd), a soft, silvery-white metal.

  3. In classical music, Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier is known as The Forty-Eight because it consists of a prelude and a fugue in each major and minor key, a total of forty-eight pieces.

  5. In the US, the states located together in mainland USA are known as the "Lower 48" or the "48 contiguous states", excluding Alaska and Hawaii.
  6. The A48 is a trunk road in Great Britain running from the A40 at Highnam, 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Gloucester, England, to the A40 at Carmarthen, Wales. Before the Severn Bridge opened, it was a major route between England and South Wales. For most of its route, it runs almost parallel to the M4 motorway. There’s also an M48, a 13-mile (21 km) long motorway, which crosses the Severn near Chepstow, Monmouthshire, linking England and Wales via the Severn Bridge.
  7. '48 is a 1996 novel by James Herbert. The book follows an American pilot stranded in a dystopian London after Adolph Hitler, moments before being completely defeated, uses a biological weapon delivered by V-2 missiles, which mostly wipes out the human race.

Sent away to school to get her away from undesirable company, Agnes finds herself homesick and lonely. A brief connection with Jason Warner leads to the teenage crush to end all teenage crushes. Jason is barely aware Agnes exists, but she plans her whole future around him.
