15 January: The Who

On this date in 1965 The Who released I Can't Explain, their first single. 10 facts about The Who:

  1. The band consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, lead guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon.
  2. Before settling on the name The Who (chosen from a list of jokey names which included “No One” and “The Hair”, because it "had a pop punch") the band were known as The Detours and The High Numbers.
  3. Before the band became famous, Roger Daltrey worked in a sheet metal factory and made their first Guitars.
  4. They wrote all their hit songs themselves except for one, a cover of Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochrane.
  5. They were known for wild behaviour like smashing guitars and Drum kits on stage; and after a performance in Flint, Michigan, they caused damages worth $24,000 at a hotel. All this meant they were banned from performing in the United States for a time, but the ban was lifted in time for them to perform at Woodstock.
  6. The Muppets character Animal is based on Keith Moon.
  7. The Who made it into the Guinness Book of Records twice. Once for a record concert attendance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 when between 600,000 and 700,000 people showed up to their set; and for the Loudest Concert at a show in London in 1976. They set the record at 126 decibels, although KISS have surpassed that with a concert reaching 136 dbs.
  8. At a show in New York, a man once tried to run up onto the stage and grab the microphone from Daltrey, and got punched and kicked by the band. Turned out the man was a plain clothes police officer who was there to warn everyone that there was a Fire in the shop next door.
  9. Roger Daltrey was knighted in 2005 by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to music and charity. He has been a vocal supporter of several causes, including literacy and cancer research.
  10. Keith Moon died of a drug overdose in 1978, at the age of 32. Phil Collins, having a temporary break from Genesis, asked if he could replace Moon, but Townshend had already asked Kenney Jones, who had previously played with the Small Faces and Faces. The band released two more studio albums with Kenney Jones before disbanding in 1983. They re-formed for events such as Live Aid and their 25th anniversary tour and the Quadrophenia tours of 1996 and 1997.
