12 February: The Egyptian God Geb

In Traditional Egyptian astrology, the current sign is the sign of Geb. Here are ten facts about Geb, the Egyptian god of the Earth:

  1. He is said to be the son of Tefnut and Shu, and the twin brother of Nut, goddess of the Sky. According to myth, Geb and Nut were locked in an embrace and had to be separated by their father.
  2. Geb's name means "weak one" or "lame one".
  3. Egyptian creation myths speak of Geb having children in the usual way, with Nut – Osiris, Isis, Nephthys, Horus the Elder, and Seth. There’s also a myth that he laid a huge egg, from which the sun god hatched. Hence one of his sacred animals is a goose. In another myth, he had a different wife, Renenutet, a minor goddess of the harvest and mother of Nehebkau, a primeval Snake god associated with the underworld.
  4. He is sometimes referred to as the Great Cackler. This is a reference to the call of a goose after laying an egg.
  5. An alternative reason for the name is that Egyptians believed that when Geb laughed, it caused Earthquakes.
  6. His other sacred animal is a snake. He is said to be the father of snakes and is sometimes depicted with a snake’s head.
  7. He’s often portrayed lying down, as the Earth itself, with Green skin to represent vegetation. Barley was said to grow from his ribs and flowers from his elbow.
  8. Geb was also associated with the underworld and had the power to imprison the unworthy dead in their tombs, and to open his huge snake jaws to let them out into the afterlife.
  9. Geb is sometimes equivalent to Greek titan Kronos.
  10. In honour of Geb, a new Pharoah would release four wild Geese, each one flying towards the four corners of the sky. This was intended to bring him luck.
