12 December: Famous Alexanders

Today is the name day for people called Alexander. 

The name Alexander is derived from the Greek words meaning 'Defender of the people' or 'Protector of men'. From the male name Alexander derive the names Alex, Alexis and Xander. Famous Alexanders: 


Alexander Graham Bell
  1. Alexander the Great king of the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon who created one of the largest empires in ancient history. He named 70 cities in his empire after himself, and one after his favourite Horse.
  2. Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922), Scottish inventor of the first practical telephone. On the day of his funeral, all the telephones in North America were silenced as a mark of respect. 
  3. Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), French writer known as the author of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. He also wrote a lot of non-fiction – articles about politics and culture and books about French history.  
  4. Alexander Fleming (1881–1955), Scottish discoverer of Penicillin. He was named Honorary Chief Doy-gei-tau of the Native American Kiowa tribe.
  5. Alexander Hamilton (1755–1804), first United States Secretary of the Treasury and one of the founding fathers of the USA. The 2015 musical Hamilton is about him.
  6. Alexander Pope (1688–1744), English poet, whose works include The Rape of the Lock. He is the second most quoted writer in the English language, after Shakespeare.
  7. Aleksandr Pushkin  (1799–1837), Russian writer. He died in a duel with a French soldier who tried to seduce his wife.
  8. Alexander Skarsgård (born 1976), Swedish actor who played Eric Northman in True Blood and Perry Wright in Big Little Lies.
  9. Alexander McCall Smith (born 1948), Scottish writer known as the author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. 
  10. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008), Russian writer, Nobel laureate, Soviet dissident. After serving in the Red Army during World War II, he was sentenced to spend eight years in a labour camp for criticising Josef Stalin in a private letter. He wrote about his experiences in his book, The Gulag Archipelago.
