5th October: Ray Kroc's birthday

Ray Kroc was the founder of McDonald's and was born on this date in 1902. He opened his first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1955. It is now the site of a McDonald's museum. So here are 10 things you didn't know about McDonald’s.

  1. The Queen owns a McDonald's restaurant as part of her property portfolio.
  2. 68 million people a day eat at a McDonald's somewhere in the world. That's more than the population of the UK. Yet McDonald’s isn't the world's largest fast-food chain. Subway is.
  3. McDonald's has 761,000 employees worldwide. That's more than the population of Luxembourg.
  4. When McDonald’s first opened, they didn't sell Hamburgers, but Hot dogs.
  5. Surveys have shown that 88% of people could identify the golden arches logo (designed by Jim Schindler in 1962) while only 54% could recognise the Christian cross.
  6. Their salads are more fattening than their burgers. A McDonald’s crispy chicken and bacon salad offers 380 calories, while a hamburger is a mere 250.
  7. In Japan, where 'r' is rarely pronounced, Ronald McDonald is Donald McDonald.
  8. The world's largest McDonald’s is in Orlando, Florida, a multi-level McDonald’s which measures 30,000 square feet. The biggest UK McDonald’s restaurant is in the Olympic Park in London. It opened just in time for the London 2012 Games.
  9. McDonald's is the world's largest distributor of toys, with one included in 20% of all sales.
  10. In 2005 a man called Ronald McDonald robbed... a Wendy's.
